Dancers speak. A dynamic arena-style show that brings timely political speeches and debates to the stage—voiced and embodied by a diverse group of dancers.
Speeches that once ignited crowds through a single voice now become the soundtrack of the visceral, sweating, feeling body. A one-time Hyde Park where the personal and the political collide.
The piece incorporates speeches by political figures.
Tonight’s speeches: Martin Luther King Jr., Richard Nixon, Sanna Marin, Alexei Navalny, Sojourner Truth, Jacinda Ardern.
From the creator: 1995. The distance between my home and the Prime Minister’s home is 550 meters. Years go by, and every so often I find myself re-measure the physical and mental distance between us. Today, thirty years later, I am still the same child, born into a country where a Prime Minister was murdered. When I first heard the term “squad”, it was used metaphorically to describe a group of U.S. Congress members, mostly women. This word is also heard in the street, where hip-hop was born, describing a group you look up to. A crew you want to belong to. I’m looking for leaders I can look up to, human, courageous. I want to meet them up close, to sense the sweat on their foreheads, as if I could almost touch.
