The Work

WAKATI

WAKATI (A moment) is a dance performance that includes a duet and two short films (Home & Body vs. Mouth) projection that demonstrate the layers of moments and talks about how those moments can change an individual’s attitudes, thoughts, experiences, and life. The interpretation of this piece shows the power of courage built up through the events that happened in our lives by surprise and led us to patience, attentiveness, and understanding to face challenges or joys. The performance deals with the moments that can change a person’s life: the development from childhood to adulthood and the world around us. WAKATI shows in images, dance, and music how we can find support, care, and comfort in our shared experiences in the moments we share with others in our daily lives.

Home
I ran away from home around the ages of six and eight due to child abuse and lived as a street child in different parts of Tanzania for over 10 years. When I moved to the city (Dar es Salaam), I didn’t have a place to stay; I joined different gangs specializing in snatching and stealing vehicle parts for a living. I would have been dead by now, but art saved me and gave me a new home within dance.
Home is a film based on the true story of Samwel Japhet that tells of the transformative power of art.

Body vs. Mouth
Body vs. Mouth – means that many things will arise from nature when we give them a chance. Our bodies are part of nature. Give yours a space to speak. Our mouths carry too many stories that are sagging through lies. Nature speaks its own language; it speaks the truth. It speaks in a way it cannot be done by any mouth. This uncontrollable power will fade if we do not allow our bodies’ natural expression. It will not be able to connect with our ancestor’s spirits. My nature seeks to talk.
