The Work

In social conventions, especially those relating to children’s education, the onomatopoeia Shhh… is a sound indicating preserving silence.

When we don’t want things to be heard out loud, we place our finger on our lips and whisper shhh…
Not once has it been said that secrets, especially the less painful “white” lies, are the basis of family ties or of groups of people who seemingly live happily together but hide unsolved underlying problems.

This theme inspired Avi Kaiser and Sergio Antonino’s choreography to build a framework for a quartet consisting of two women and two men of different generations who experience the complexity of being together. Love, hate, reluctance, attraction, a sense of belonging, and a need for independence are some of the emotions explored in this work.

After October 7th, the sound of Shhh… the instruction of silence dramatically reverberated in our daily lives, and the family structure has suffered situations of disconnection, brokenness, and helplessness – while, on the other hand, it gained a tremendous power of unification and preservation, a power that unites our society.

The Ensemble

Avi Kaiser and Sergio Antonino have lived and worked in Israel since 2013. They have broad experience in dance, having performed 20 group works and three duets throughout Europe, the US, and Israel. In 2002, they were appointed directors of “The Roof -TanzRaum” dance center in Duisburg, Germany, as guest artists of the city and the Lehmbruck Modern Sculpture Museum. Kaiser worked closely with Susanna Linke as a dancer and choreographer for 15 years. He created works in Canada, the United States, Senegal, the Paris and Zurich Opera. The French Ministry of Culture awarded him the title of Professor of Contemporary Dance based on his international authority in this field. Antonino was invited to create at the Venice Biennale, won the Sakharov Prize, and created several works for the prestigious Paolo Grassi National School in Milan. He received his master’s degree in art history from the University of La Sapienza in Rome. Their works strongly emphasize the place, the arena in which things take place. In recent years, many of their pieces have been done in and for public spaces in cooperation with architects and photographers. One of their leading projects since 2009 is the duet “At Your Place,” which brings the dance to people’s homes, school classes, offices, or any other possible space where intimacy allows a different movement observation.
