“This dance is a love song for love, for all my loved ones and lovers, A song of praise for the ability to be a loving woman who is not dependent on love.”
– Orly Portal
Fakarouni is a dance of passion, a ritual revealing the intimate connection between the temporal body and enduring love. The work is set to the music of famed Egyptian musician Umm Kulthum, Kulthum, called by many other names including the “voice of a nation” and the Star of the East, made her way in a man’s world to become a modern Arab cultural icon and a proud female expression of liberation from patriarchy. In Portals’s first work for male dancers, the eternal longing in Umm Kultum’s voice is embodied in masculine form. Yet, gender is blurred as ancient archetypes are broken, forming a new definition of masculinity and femininity. Portal joins her voice with that of Umm Kulthum, weaving music and dance together with the undulating ceremonial body to create a mesmerizing tapestry of desire. The movement of the pelvis holds traditional and folkloric social meaning, and conjures the ingathering of the exiles. Fakarouni is a work of virtuosic contemporary cabaret that is at once modern and ancient, mythic and existent. The work was created as part of the Suzanne Dellal Centre Residency Program.

English Version Daphna Ben Yosef
They talk about you again… They remind me…
Rekindling the longing like a flame in my heart… in my eyes
Bringing back the past with its glory and beauty, its torments and cruelty
Oh, my soul, I remembered
Why did we part ways?
A single whisper turned everything around
Why remind me that which my heart has forgotten and sealed
By the time I let go of all memory of dreams, aspirations, and prayers
Two words spoken were enough to deprive me of my tolerance
My heart became consumed by the fires of torment
Reliving all that I have been through with you
My wistful eyes long for your smile
A yearning to hear you speak
My jealousy and doubt again aroused
And the night…the night grew longer than its hours
I hear your heart calling me
My soul with you forever
What is my world worth when you are not with me…?
Am I complete without you?
After the anguish of your absence
They talk about you once more
Meddling with the scar that has long become a memory
Awakens me to live for another tomorrow
Oh blood of my life, I am powerless by fire, jealousy, and shame
Wanting to escape my torment and rest in your arms
The breaking points, confrontations, and arduous nights
They no longer matter
What is in my heart still remains
The same love, even deeper
The same longing, even greater
Oh, oh, oh, my love
My life without you is impossible
Life is merely just the passing days
And why waste them with conflicts and coming apart
When we can create a beautiful world?
Why? Why? Why?
Through friendship, intimacy
Our lives become gentle replacing torments with love
The coming days will be better than those that have passed
The moon will glow radiant as we spread our joy
The stars will shine brighter, beaming in our eyes
And the trees will bloom before Spring arrives
What has passed with its bitter taste has been forgotten
Come, my love, let us seize the remaining days with joy
It is not life without our embrace
As we will not live twice
They remind me … Did I ever forget?
You are closer to me than my self
Both when you are far or near
The days are being spent, as are our years
However, you and your love
Your love will remain forever, with no end
With no end your love and you with no end
